Nassau
-
Nassau is located on New Providence Island, and it is the capital of this island nation. Almost seventy percent of the country’s population lives in Nassau. It’s still a laid back town though, and pleasant to visit. There is also great shopping in Nassau, especially for people who love jewelry and traditional Bahamian gifts. You’ll enjoy visiting Old Town, which hosts a mixture of Caribbean structures and abandoned buildings. The main tourist areas are in the center of town, but it’s just a short walk to other activities and historical areas, like the pink Parliament Building.
You’ll enjoy the shopping on Bay Street downtown, and there are a few restaurants in the area, in case you need a break. The British Colonial Hotel can offer you a few more expensive dining options, if you want to sample the more cultural cuisine. There are also gourmet restaurants located within blocks of the bigger hotels. Chez Willie and Graycliff are actually world-known for their cuisine and ambiance.
You can tour in different ways in and around Nassau. You may opt for a self-guided tour, if you’d prefer to go at your own pace. Or, you may want to join an organized group, so you don’t miss any of Nassau’s treasures. You’ll enjoy the colonial museums, architecture, history and culture of the city, and all are within range of the rest. Hanging out at Port George Wharf is a good place to get the feel of the city, and over one million cruise ships visit there every year.
The Bay Street shopping area has been recently beautified and refurbished. It runs along the south end of Nassau Harbour. From there, it’s an easy commute to Rawson Square, Pompey Museum, Government House and the Junkanoo Museum.
